I’m convinced that I lived through the Civil War in a past life. I was obsessed with it – I used to do Civil War re-enactments.
My parents worked their butts off to send us to Catholic schools and provide us with everything a kid could ask for. We had all the toys and advantages, ranging from motorcycles to horses. But the truth is that my parents weren’t making lots of money, giving my mother the idea of making me a model at the age of ten. I think it’s because all her friends said I could do it.
I’m from New Orleans, so growing up in this whole Anne Rice world, there’s a lot of vampire mystique and mythology that resonates especially in the city of New Orleans. So having grown up around that I was fascinated by them. Loved them. I always wanted to play one and auditioned for True Blood and couldn’t rock it to convince Allen Ball [creator] and I didn’t get it and I was very bummed. I couldn’t watch True Blood until now, ’cause now I have my own other role, so … But I was convinced after that that I wasn’t going to play a vampire, because I blew the audition.
My first job as an actor – it was a guest star role. It was called The Big Easy, it was in New Orleans. Showing up on set I kept looking at the matte box and the director kept saying, “Don’t look at the camera” and I thought, “What am I doing? I know not to do that.” And I remember this director sitting there probably thinking, “Wow, this kid … ” I think back and I laugh hysterically. I’ve actually never told anyone that.
[When I was a kid] I’ve done this Toys R Us calendar. It was a ‘Save the Environment’ calendar. I was one of the months and I was turning off a lamp telling kids to turn the light off, turn the water off, don’t run the water when you brush your teeth. We lose something like 40 million gallons of water a week or something, because people leave the water on when they brush their teeth. It’s crazy!
